...and I think I broke the bike! I'm still trying, but it's making a noise that concerns me. After all, it's not my bike! I also get covered with grease every time I get on the thing. I realize that part of it is that my legs are flabby and big, so they hang over where the chain runs. From just above my ankle almost to my groin is grease. This is the part that seems to be jumping around a bit, making a clicking noise.
If any of the bike aficionados out there can give me any suggestions, I would appreciate your thoughts. I still enjoyed the practice, except that I'm worried about doing more damage.

"Clicking" doesn't sound too ominous. I would be willing to bet you just need a cable adjustment. The derailleur is not tracking properly and it's trying to switch gears. One end or the other of the shift cable will have an adjustment knob.
